How deep a bow is in Japan determines how much respect they give off to others.


  • Shallow Bows:

    A slight bow, sometimes just a nod, is used for casual greetings or when showing general politeness overall.

  • Medium Bows:

    A moderate bow, tilting the upper body from a 30-degree angle, is used for everyday greetings, expressing gratitude, or apologizing.

  • Deep Bows:

    The deepest bow, at a 45-degree angle or greater, is reserved for more formal situations, such as greeting high-ranking officials, expressing deep gratitude or apology, or when showing utmost respect.

  • Profound Bows (Saikeirei):

    The deepest bow, with an angle of 45-70 degrees, is used in very formal settings, such as when greeting the Emperor or in extremely serious situations like apologizing deeply or asking for a great favour.

  • Dogeza:

    The most formal and rare bow, involving kneeling and touching the head to the ground, is used to express utter contrition and is reserved for extremely serious mistakes or apologies
